What was your specific profile or project topic during the internship? Like what exactly did you work upon during your internship?
I worked on porting Red Hat IN Vehicle OS onto the AM69SK and the J784S4 boards of TI
What specific domain or field did you target to get an internship in?
Embedded Software
Were there any other companies where you applied for role in similar profile where you did not get the same opportunity?
Google Hardware
What resources did you utilize to prepare for the tests/interviews?
https://docs.google.com/document/d/1z6PkrHuYKIa7YVqpO4908goBk3c_eFAtIMd0C3FgImY/edit?usp=sharing
Can you elaborate on your interview and the type of questions which were asked in the test and interview?
The selection process comprised two stages: a Mental Ability Test and an Embedded Systems Test. The Embedded section had several questions on basic C programming. I remember a question on pointers and memory allocation.
During the interview, the panel began with bit manipulation problems and followed up with additional C programming. A significant portion of the interview (approximately 20–25 minutes) was dedicated to discussing my summer project work related to Embedded Systems. I was asked to explain the project in detail. The panel appeared particularly interested in hand written diagrams I ha drawn to explain the flow of information between various devices I had in my project.Try explaining them on board or using pen and paper as this will give them more clarity
Additionally, I was asked about my familiarity with Linux, and the interviewers mentioned that having a basic understanding of Linux is considered a plus point for the role. Would recommend brushing up on Linux fundamentals like basic commands, file structure different distros it has etc.
Could you provide insights into the organizational culture of the company/university and what your peers were like?
TI followed a flat hierarchy system, so the head of my business Unit used to sit in a cubicle across from my place. It feels great working in a place where even the manager works together with you as a team. Everyone was very friendly and approachable and if you did ask them anything they would be happy to entertain and solve any doubts we had
Were there any networking opportunities or professional connections that you established during the internship?
There were interns from almost all IITs and NITs and since there were more than 600 interns we did have a very good opportunity to network with other interns.
How keen is the company on hiring interns as full-time employees in the future? How ready are they regarding PPOs?
Yes TI is aggressively expanding in India and would definitely be rolling out a good number of PPOs I guess in future
How would you describe your overall experience as an intern? Did you explore anything new, or was it just a good-pay good-work desk-job?
The experience was great in terms of the learning. I learned a lot about Linux, the architecture and the boot flow that TI uses in its boards, the build process Red Hat uses. I also learned about open source contribution and did make a couple of them to contributions too as patches
Would you recommend this internship opportunity to your juniors? Anything additional (tips regarding preparation, insight about the company anything) you would like to mention/point out?
I would highly recommend this experience to anyone interested in coding and enjoys low level programming and debugging and who also wants to gain a deeper understanding of the hardware side of things. It would be a a great match for someone in Electrical as they do have a basic understanding of the underlying things that go on in the board which is most of the work that goes on at TI.
